After my friends and I found some old dock foam that washed up after a hurricane, we sliced it up into "blanks" and proceeded to shape that ugly green foam into a board and then sighted a rocker that we liked and bent the nose and tail, to form the boards rocker. Using regular old 1/4' plywood, we traced the rocker, cut the center stringer out and glued the shaped board up. They were not safe surfboards, to say the least- but much fun concerning the educational processes that were taking place.
With the demise of Clark Foam, Darby Surfboards has chosen to utilize EPS foam and epoxy resin, as well as traditional Polyester resin/ Polyurethane construction. Since December 5. 2005, the surfboard industry has been forced to reexamine the products it utilizes in creating surfcraft. I have been very pleased with the performance and qaulity of some of the newly available foams that I've used in my personal boards, and am pleased to offer these quality foam cores to my customers. Thank you for your time and happy front side tubes! Chris Darby owner/shaper |
About
My first introduction to the surf was when Mom and Dad took us to the beach during the summers, providing the boys with blow up surf mats(remember the yellow and blue canvas mats- and the rashes from laying on them all day?); then progressing to the little styrofoam bodyboards and finally bugging the parents for a real surfboard. I began making boards around the age of 18, from old boards found in dumps or garage sales; took them home and stripped off the glass and reshaped/ reglassed them with the help of my father who was a hobby boat builder.
My travels have taken me up and down the East and West coasts of North America, the Caribbean, Costa Rica, Mexico, and Hawaii. 2005 Marks 20 years of continuous surfing and developing my craft. My surfboards are created for beginners to grand elders, with the theory in mind that surfing is and always will be about having fun. The boards I am presenting are designs that I have developed over the last 14 years of my surfing life, and I offer them in the confidence that you may find something that appeals to you.
